Another Reason to Go in the Furniture Business

A fellow writer-producer, with years of experience in series television, shared this incredible conversation with me…

Lee,

Absolutely, positively 100% true dialogue from yesterday’s meeting with
a Hollywood agent:

Agent: “I can’t sell this courtroom stuff. You got anything supernatural?”

Me: “I’ve done a treatment for a time travel Civil War story.”

Agent: “Time travel’s good, but don’t make it a period piece.”

Me: “So how do we travel in time?”

Agent: “Don’t go back so far.”

Me: “Ahhhh.”

Agent: “You want to do courtroom stuff, how about a murder trial in
outer space? ‘Alien’ meets ‘Presumed Innocent.'”

Me: “Ahhhh.”

Agent: “Okay, okay…how about this? A lawyer discovers the Chief
Justice of the Supreme Court is really Satan.”

Me: “I don’t do non-fiction.”

  2. I can’t believe the idiocy of the people in Hollywood. How can they live with themselves, knowingly foisting such stupidity on the American public? Of course, when a program like “The Simple Life” becomes a hit, then the American public isn’t doing too well in the smarts department either.

  3. Bonnie,
I agree 100%. I came across a few good television shows last year and actually thought that maybe there was hope for the industry. These shows gave my gray matter something to exercise with. Then like you said:
“Of course, when a program like “The Simple Life” becomes a hit, then the American public isn’t doing too well in the smarts department either.”
Every time I pay the cable bill I often wonder what the hell I’m paying for? At least I get the B.B.C. and some Canadian programming.
And it’s no wonder that when these kinds of shows get distributed world wide, any kind of “Reality Based” show for that much, that anyone not living in the U.S. thinks that we’re all like this. Nope, not this one. I’m personally sick and tired of “Reality Show this and Reality Show that!” And to top it off, raising teenagers myself I see alot of them criticizing this type of programming on how “scripted” and “stupid” it really makes them look. It’s just as bad as soap opera’s any more. If I want a reality show or a soap opera all I have to do is turn the tube off and look at my own life! LOL! If anything it’s FREE!
Sorry about the rant here, Lee.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled Blogging!
    Cheers,
    Mary
