Craptastic Sammy A-Go-Go!

It doesn't get much more craptastic than this — Sammy Davis Jr. sings the theme to "My Mother The Car," one of the worst sitcoms in television history. What the hell was he thinking!?

UPDATE 5/30/2010: YouTube has blocked my clip, so  here's another one… and this one is even better. You can actually see Sammy performing the song with dancers on his TV show!

But wait, there's more! Here's Sammy singing the theme to "The Jeffersons"

And, in case you missed'em before, here's Sammy singing the themes to KOJAK, HAWAII FIVE-O, MARY HARTMAN, CHICO AND THE MAN and MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW

  1. Made my day – thanks. The first video is blocked for copyright reasons – too bad, it would have been craptastic to hear a gogo version.

  2. What kind of world do we live in when we can’t hear Sammy singing the theme from “My Mother The Car”?!?!? (It looks like that video was removed after you posted it, due to copyright restrictions.)

  3. Okay, I got through the Hawaii 5-0 theme, but the words, the words—!
“If they hit you below, call on me” ???
That aside, I can’t think of anyone else who could have done the job. Tried to imagine other singers of 1968 tackling it and the other themes, and that’s a bad thing to do before coffee.
So Mary Tyler Moore and Mary Hartman, sung by Simon and Garfunkle?
The Rolling Stones could tackle the theme to Kojak.
Chico and the Man performed by Steppenwolf…
    Or maybe not.
Aretha Franklin singing the Jeffersons theme.
Going with that. She can sing anything and it will sound awesome.
Let’s keep Sammy with the car. I LIKED that show.
Yes. I was a kid then, a LITTLE kid, so I may be excused. I’d climb in the family car and try to get it to talk to me. It seemed like a good idea to have talking cars.
Oh, wait, we HAVE those now!

  4. Sammy is one of those entertainers who you love DESPITE his singing! He and Frank and Dino belong to that earlier 50’s era, where the way to success was to become a PERSONALITY. Rodney Dangerfield was a latter day example. Now, singers make it on their voice and their song, but I’m glad that Lady Gaga has brought back the THEATRE to pop culture as it also brings back drama into a concert — it’s no longer just a concert, it’s an event. We live, now, in an era where “more is more” having, thankfully, excited the “less is more” era. Sammy makes me smile when he sings, but that’s okay!

  5. I remember “My Mother the Car”, although I still find it hard to believe it existed in the first place.
The clip of Sammy’s show is priceless. He really was talented.
