This was such a delightful insight into ALL the books I’ve read. Living in Serra Retreat I’m a huge fan with my stomping grounds as your backgrounds! So much FUN!
Even Calico was believable. But I’ve just started Fallen Star and you got the reference to the Adamson’s absolutely correct. Only thing missing so afar is the ghost town that Malibu has become with empty retail and the lack of anyplace delicious to eat! And btw not everyone is rich. Most of the Hollywood rich are holiday citizens only; they don’t cook and don’t need good ingredients. We can’t even support a Gelsons. Ralph’s has dumbed down their Murray’s cheese to 3/4 of their space to Goudas and millions of Cheddars. Gone are the imported French and Italian soft triple creams. MY POINT IS, the REAL Malibu isn’t what has been illustrated to those on the outside. The Fires didn’t help either. I’d love to see an honest description of my immediate space. BUT DON’T TAKE THIS AS CRITIQUE; I LOVE YOUR BOOKS AND AWAIT EACH ONE!!! HUGE FAN HERE! GREAT INTERVIEW!!
I wrote FALLEN STORE before the fires…and I also mention a Malibu restaurant that has since closed down. So yes, the references to the area of Malibu along PCH *are* out of date now (which I mention in my Afterword). I remember going to the Serra Retreat in the late 1990s to meet regularly with an actor I was working with…that was when the guard house there, but it was unoccupied and there were no gates for years because it was, if memory serves, built without approval or something.
