Spenser For Hire…Again

Robert B. Parker reports on his blog that he's in talks to remake bring back Spenser to TV…again, only this time it will be a remake of the SPENSER FOR HIRE series. Somehow I missed this news, which isn't new. On April 23rd, he wrote:

we are in negotiation for a remake of the SPENSER: FOR HIRE series to be produced by SONY/DREAMWORKS, and shown on TNT. There is often a slip twixt cup and lip in Los Angeles, but so far things are promising.

And in an update on May 29th, he said the project was still alive:

Negotiations continue on the Spenser For Hire front. The mills of Hollywood grind exceeding fine. But I have no reason to think it won't happen in awhile.

Not only that, but Parker reports he's adding a new character to the Spenser mix.

I am currently writing a book with the working title SIXKILL in which a new character joins Spenser's world. Probably be out next year.

I am excited about the remake news. SPENSER FOR HIRE will always be special to me…my first produced TV episode was for that series.

  1. I too am looking forward to the reincarnation of Spenser: for Hire.
Being the cynical sort, it occurs to me that Dr.Parker is either adding a recurring child to the mix or giving Spenser a younger partner, perhaps a woman.
All is well and good but will they bring back Sammy Backlin?
If Castle tanks, Nathan Fillion would be a great Spenser.

  2. TNT – that stinks, there are well over a million of us out there that does not have cable or satalite to watch TNT or any other cable network. When will they release Spencer on DVD? I would love all things Spencer, including the Joe Montega movies.

  3. I thought that they should make a Spenser theatrical movie with Mickey Rourke as the lead. I think Dwayne Johnson (aka “The Rock) could pull off playing Hawk. The characters have to be bigger than life. They play out in the books as almost Superheroes.

  4. I think Ron Livingston would make a great Spenser. He has the look and cockiness that Robert Urich pulled off so well. He is not very big though. Would probably have to beef up a bit. Hawk may be harder to cast as I cannot imagine anyone other than Avery Brooks as Hawk.

  5. Dwayne Johnson would be okay for Hawk, but how about LLCoolJ? He is built big, has been in a lot of things etc.
Nathan Fillion is too soft, but the right age and look. I think Spenser would be a hard person to cast.
Susan would be equally as hard to find.
Joe Montegna was a disaster. Robert Ulrich was perfect to me because I saw the series before reading the books. I know he was not thought to be good, but I liked him.
Just put the show back on TV and we’ll adjust!!!!

  6. I TRULY BELIEVE IT IS MISTAKE FOR THE SPENSER FOR HIRE FRANCHISE TO TRY TO IMPROVE ON PERFECTION ROBERT URICH AND AVERY BROOKS AND THE ENTIRE CAST ENBODIED THOSE CHARACTERS.YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT AVENUE TO TAKE. A PREQUAL OFFERS A FRESH LOOK AT THE CHARACTERS BRILLIANTLLY PENNED BY THE LATE ROBERT.B.PARKER. SPENSERS HISTORY IS FULL OF RICH CHARACTER DEFYNING MOMENTS THAT HAVE SHAPPED HIM INTO THE TOUGH WISE CRACKING GUMSHOE WE ADORE. FOR INSTANCE HIS FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH HAWK,HIS DAYS AS IN THE WAR, AS A COP,AS A NOT SO SUCCESSFUL PRIZE FIGHTER. THE FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ONCE MARRIED (NOT YET A DOCTOR) SUSAN SILVERMAN. AS WE THE VIEWERS TAKE RIDE ALONG WITH HIM GREAT STUFF. THE CAST:MARK WAHLBERG AS SPENSER HE HAS THE ACTING CHOPS AND THE BOYISH GOOD LOOKS TO PULL OF SPENSER HE IS ALSO FROM BOSTON. MICHAEL JAI WHITE AS HAWK. HE HAS THE STEEL EYED RESERVE COUPLED WITH A BATMAN SCARY TYPE DEEP VOICE FOLLOWED BY AN AFROCENTRIC SAFISTICATION AND STYLE TO MORE THAN PULL OFF THE ROLE OF HAWK. HAS SUSAN,CLAIRE FORLANI,OR RHONA MITRA, LENA HEADLEY,OLIVIA WILDE,KATE BECKINSALE,MONICA,BELLUCCI,RENA SOFER. AMANDA PEET,JUILA STYLES AS LAW STUDENT RITA FIORE. ALEC BALDWIN,OR ED HARRIS MARTY QUIRK,DONAL LOGUE AS FRANK BELSON. I THINK IT WOULD WORK. JOE MONTEGNAS WAS A DRY SPENSER WHOEVER THAT CAT WAS THAT PLAYED HAWK FORGET. ROBERT AND AVERY WHERE AND STILL ARE MY GUYS.
