  1. Here’s why, from Lee’s link:
Sean Penn planned a personal rescue of Katrina victims over the weekend but forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of his boat. The vessel began to take on water within seconds of its launch, forcing Penn to frantically bail water out with a red plastic cup. Additionally, the boat’s motor failed to start and those aboard were forced to use paddles.
With the boat loaded with members of Penn’s entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: “How are you going to get any people in that thing?”
I wish I was making this shit up, but horrible tragedies have a way of bringing out the ridiculous in celebrities. When you literally have hundreds of millions of dollars at your disposal, setting out on a paddle boat with your personal photorapher probably isn’t the best way you can help.

  2. Yeah, I read that. What I haven’t found is corroboration from any reliable sources that the “personal entourage” wasn’t there trying to help. Would you go out alone in a boat to help hurricane victims if you had the option of bringing more strong arms along?
I don’t care one way or the other about Sean Penn, and it’s quite possible it was a photo-op. I just don’t see yet where there’s enough evidence to convict him.

  3. I’m with you, Keith. The story might be funny, but I’m so sick of people bitching at each other instead of trying to do something about the problem. Can’t we at least wait a week out of respect before we all start calling each other a-holes again?

  4. It ISN’T a photo op. Penn doesn’t NEED photo ops. What would be the point? He’s not trying to cover-up for a complete failure to act.
He’s down there pulling people out of bactria infested waters and folks here are making fun of him? He’s doing a lot more than most of us would, god bless him.
Wouldn’t it be nice if all the people in this country with the kind of coin he earns had the guts to get down and dirty along with him?

  5. Other than organization of all kinds of help, the other thing I’m seeing the most on many blogs all over the Internet is that this hurricane and aftermath are bringing out the worst in people in terms of communication and personal beliefs – so much anger and he/she said going on. It is being such a divisive, political issue. And for some reason those who weren’t directly affected by it are taking it personally as if they do have a stake in it. I don’t blame the government; I blame the media.

  6. No I would salute Sean Penn on this one, any Hollywood star could write a big check, but he is in the mud and muck working to improve the situation. I would expect to see Martin Sheen helping out as well.

  7. This picture has been cropped and the remaining photographs show him and his boat in approximately 6 inches of water. An automobile is in the background showing the same thing.
