The wave of British TV series remakes on American networks is continuing. Variety reports that Fox is developing a U.S. version of "Absolutely Fabulous" set in Los Angeles. Christine Zander, a writer for "Saturday Night Live," will write the script and exec produce with Mitch Hurwitz, Ian Moffet and the original creator/star/producer Jennifer Saunders. This is not the first time a U.S. network has tried an Abfab redo. Roseanne Barr and Carrie Fisher teamed up for a U.S. version ten years back for ABC but it went nowhere.
Wasn’t there one a few years back with Jean Smart and Mary McCormack, at least “inspired” by AbFab?
BBCA is now running commercials ending with the tag “Where American television comes from….”
I hope this fizzles out as well. There is one AbFab. One. Those bastards need to learn that.
If they dare try an American version of “Gavin & Stacey” (which I saw when it debuted on BBCA and have loved every episode since), I will engage in decapitation usually reserved for zombies. But then, I can’t tell the difference.
I think that the whole idea is ridiculous. The only reason I can see to remake any show or movie is because the original version wasn’t available on US tv/cable. The original AbFab was available on US cable so there really is no other reason I can see why this would be necessary or successful.
This Brit remake mania, Lee, participates of an archaic conception of television programming. It was conceivable at a time where UK shows were relegated to PBS and cheapo syndication deals, when there were no VHS or DVD, or even internet.
Everybody in the civilized world knows the original Life on Mars, maybe ABC wishes to duplicate NBC (The Office) but what’s tragic is that they had to remake it twice -with the two versions of the pilot.
Yesterday’s evening was Brit remake Fest on US television, I’ve not seen the ratings yet. What’s next? A remake of Me and My Girl with Emilio Estevez and Miley Cyrus? I would like to see a Diagnosis Murder in London, just for change…
Or Baywatch: Brighton.
Nobody can surpass Jennifer Saunders! We, in Canada, have always gotten AbFab. Since most of our TV is piped in form US networks I can safely say – Canada WON’T be watching. AbFab is legendary in the north!!
it would be funny if Jennifer Coolidge, played the champaign filled Patsy.
if she’s in it it could be abfab.
