Author Susanna Clarke answers questions about her wonderful book JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL in remarkable detail. If you loved the book, you’ll love her lengthy essay which, not surprisingly, seems to be written in the same voice.
(Thanks Andy for the tip!)
In keeping with your previous post about two paragraphs being more than enough, I have just started reading this book. I knew I was going to love it after, literally, two paragraphs. Last night I went back to the first page and read those two paragraphs aloud to myself, they were so nice.
This one is going to have to go seriously wrong to make me dislike it.
You’re welcome, Lee. When I came across it, I thought you’d enjoy it.
I read most of the book but then got sidetracked by work and a new baby and other such matters. I hope to finish it soon.
P.S. Thanks for the link back, although I think it’s a little wonky! 🙂
Most books I really like I zip through. This one was so special that I only let myself read a chapter a night. JS&MN took ten years to write – I figured it would be a long wait until the next book.
I loved the book. And you’re right — it’s clear from the first page that you are in the hands of a natural storyteller with a distinct voice.
