Obscure TV on DVD

There’s no logic behind the TV shows that are turning up on DVD. Is the world really clamoring for the complete "The Joey Bishop Show," "Dusty’s Trail," "The Doris Day Show," "Highlander: The Raven," "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Beastmaster," "Doc," "That’s My Mama," "Guns of Will Sonnet,"  "What’s Happening?" and "Earth 2?"

And yet, where are the shows I’ve done? Where are those lost classics  "She-Wolf of London," "Murphy’s Law," "Likely Suspects," "Deadly Games," "Cosby Mysteries," "SeaQuest," "The Highwayman," "Cobra," "Diagnosis Murder," and, of course,  the complete "New Adventures of Flipper" starring the teenage Jessica Alba?

On the other hand, some real gems are coming out… I was thrilled to learn from the folks at TVSquad that all 26 episodes of the classic sitcom "Buffalo Bill" are coming to DVD in September.

Now if they’d only put out "Harry O," "Spenser For Hire," "The Night Stalker,""Search,"  "The Rockford Files," and "Maverick"…

  1. Oh yeah, “The Night Stalker”!
If anything good comes out of the new series coming up this fall, maybe we’ll finally see the original series on DVD?
    We can only hope.
If not, I can always convert the Columbia House VHS collection I have to DVD & then two days later it will be announced!

  3. I doubt I’d want to watch it again, but BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP had a decent theme.
However, the ROCKFORD FILES theme blows it away–as well as being probably the first music I ever taught myself on the piano, including the timpani figure at the beginning.
The other early theme I taught myself on the piano was SWAT, which I can’t even remember anymore.

  4. Those old shows are probably so cheap to put out it’s a no brainer.
Personally, I’m about ready for Scarecrow and Mrs. King to hit the DVD machine.

  5. No “Holmes and Yoyo?”
I suspect that next fall’s Night Stalker will be so terrible that fans will demand the original.

  6. There was a recent article in Video Business about the tidal wave of TV DVD releases hitting the shelves. Studios are flooding the market with cheap DVD sets to cash in quickly before the trend goes into the crapper. I would liken these tactics to the spate of “collectible” comics that flooded the shelves in the early nineties and nearly killed the comic book industry.
I’ve worked on several of the Cannell sets and for what they are – 70’s / 80’s tv shows – they do a pretty good job of adding extras to make the experience worthwhile.

  7. I’d love to see “Deadly Games” on DVD.
And “Tales of the Gold Monkey” as well as a few shows that only went a few episodes. Anyone remember “Q.E.D?”

  8. Does anyone remember a very odd pilot that showed in the summer sometime between 85 and 87 that was based around teenagers in Hollywood going to a mall. THe killer was that they sang musical numbers instead of acting. I saw it once when I was hanging out one evening with my sister while my folks were out of town. All I remember is the horrendous singing and dancing numbers and the neon pink and blue sets. It was the strangest show I have ever seen, but no one seems to remember it.
I lived in the country at the time, so we only got the three main networks.
MTV’s new musical, “American Mall”, reminded me of it.
