The other day, someone asked me for a list of some of my favorite quick beach reads for a hot afternoon. This is by no means complete, but here’s what I passed along:
A MOMENT TO PREY by Harry Whittington
THE NAME OF THE GAME IS DEATH by Dan J. Marlowe
ONE ENDLESS HOUR by Dan J, Marlowe (sequel to book mentioned above)
MIAMI BLUES by Charles Willeford
TIDEWATER BLOOD by William Hoffman
MIAMI PURITY by Vicki Hendricks
THE EIGER SANCTION by Trevanian
MR. PARADISE by Elmore Leonard
IRON LAKE by William Kent Krueger
FLETCH by Gregory McDonald
WOLF MOON by Ed Gorman
THE ONES YOU DO by Daniel Woodrell
WOMAN POSSESSED by Harry Whittington
DARK RIDE by Kent Harrington
GUN MONKEYS by Victor Gischler
PAYDIRT by Garry Disher (or DEATH DEAL, CROSSKILL, PAY-OFF, any of his "Wyatt" books)
I especially like Harrington’s DARK RIDE. I would also add his latest RED JUNGLE!
You’ve recommended some really great books here. The Marlowes are among my all-time favorites. Trevanian’s EIGER SANCTION was probably the best black comedy/spy send-up of all time, and of course, Gischler’s GUN MONKEYS is magic in every way. Not to mention the Willeford, Gorman and Leonard…
Question re Dan J Marlowe’s “Drake” Series. The 12th book of the series is titled “Operation Counterpunch.” Does anyone know if he wrote any more about that character?
Also, where could one find a biohtaphy of him & list of all his works? I found yr site on Google but there are many extraneous listings which requires much search time.
Thank you.
Pls disregard above post request. I’ve just found the info on the Author part of the Ultimate Mystery Web Guide. Apparently Marlowe wrote only 12 books in the Drake series. I really enjoy the character. See link below:

I hope this will be of use to other fans of Marlowe & “Earl Drake.”
