Variety reports that Mark Wahlberg will in SHOOTER, the movie version of Stephen Hunter’s POINT OF IMPACT, the first in his popular, long-running series of novels about a master sniper named Swagger (and several prequels about Swagger’s father). Antoine Fugua will direct with a script by Jonathan Lemkin. The film has been kicking around Hollywood for a while now. It was originally developed as a vehicle for Keanu Reeves and, before that, Robert Redford.
I’ve read most of Hunter’s books, and while POINT OF IMPACT is one of his best, I think my favorite novel of his is DIRTY WHITE BOYS.
Hunter is very good, although I didn’t care much for Tapestry of Spies I really liked Point of Impact. Should make a entertaining movie.
Maybe I’m just old school, but I’m huge fan of the Earl Swagger novels–HOT SPRINGS, PALE HORSE COMING and HAVANA. I’d love to see one of these make it to the big screen.
I’m also a big fan of *Pale Horse Coming*, but I’m not sure I want to see a movie version of it. (Who do you get to play the other six characters?)
I’ve just started the book, but I’m also pretty excited about *American Gunfight*, Hunter’s non-fiction book (written with John Bainbridge) about the 1950 attempt to kill President Truman.
I am a big fan of Hunter’s Dirty White Boys – thought that was the best of the lot. ALway wondered why it didn’t make it to the big screen.
